Views around Alexandria, VA October, 2019

One of our churches - Covenant Baptist UCC on South Capitol in DC. Today they celebrated 74 years since their founding. There are so many things to love about Covenant. The have stained glass windows where the characters of the Bible are represented as African. The music is to die for. Aaron Meyers is music director and was a friend of Karens from the jazz scene. We also know the bassist Percy. They have a social justice history. I'm going to possibly get involved in that. One of the coolest things is the SPIRIT dance team. They have members from primary school to senior age. It's so exciting to see the age range.

Below is a church we visited recently - Lee Memorial AME in Kensington, MD. Last week they celebrated 115 years since their founding. They had a profound sense of community. We met one of the founders descendants who spoke a few words during the service. Karen got introduced to the pastor thru a prayer line. She was introduced to the prayer line thru a woman at Covenant. During our visit so many people were saying hi to Karen who recognized her name and voice. They were very fond of her. She was asked to lead the prayer line Tuesday for the first time.

They have a pipe hanging from the ceiling that is a remnant of the wood stove flue from their history. They have a tiny little choir area. It was a very cool building with stained glass with donors names on them. The ceiling had the tin plate style ceiling of a century ago. They had lunch prepared for everyone which was delicious.

Below is a trip we made to Sardis restaurant. There are a lot of Peruvian restaurants in the area. This one had yucca fries. I really enjoyed them. Karen had the fried okra which was good.
